Short Story (for those in a rush)
Long story short, I played a Sofar Sounds show and this unbelievably powerful recording of my song I Will Devour is the result:
Slightly Longer Story (for those who love stories)
I was strolling the streets of Camden when the call came.
“Hi Nate,” piped the friendly American voice over the phone, “It’s Rafe from Sofar Sounds here. I’ve had a last minute cancellation and wondered if you want to play at tonight’s Sofar gig?”
After a slightly breathless “Yes, sure thing,” I calmly said farewell and put my phone back into my pocket…before sprinting down the street with a ridiculous grin on my face, skipping as I ran, attempting to communicate with the ground my intense excitement at what had just occurred.
If you don’t know, Sofar Sounds is a series of secret shows put on around the world by people who want to hear intimate music in special places. Rafe Offer began Sofar a few years ago in London after being frustrated by not having a place to listen to intimate shows where the aritsts were the focus (not talking, tweeting, drinking, etc). Sofar has become a massively popular international phenomena and is growing all the time (Sofar Sounds was recently said to be one of London’s top 20 startup companies). Suffice to say, getting on their list to play is a huge compliment for any musician.
The fact that I got to play, even last minute…well, it made me happy in all the ways happiness lives. It also made me nervous! I had two songs to communicate everything I am as a human and artist. I chose my new song In The Shadows as my first song and as the last note faded, the crowd erupted in cheers, whistles and cries of appreciation. STOKED!
I chose I Will Devour for the second song as it is so much fun to sing with people, and I still think it’s one of my strongest lyrical and conceptual pieces. Anyway, as you’ve heard above, the result was electrifying!
I’m off to lie in the sun.
Yours in music
PS: here’s the song once more, just because I’m that excited!
